Fixed Before I Am

Rude Awakening

“No problem can be solved by the same level of consciousness that created it.”

~ Albert Einstein

When I finally ripped the duct tape of organized religion off my captive brain, I was sure I would never again feel guilty about “talking back”, taking the last cookie or fantasizing about sex with George Carlin.

Every time I finished a diet, I was certain I’d never again allow my body to defy the elasticity of my yoga pants. Blah, blah, f#^*ing blah!

What’s wrong with me? I’m an educated woman with an English degree, no less. I taught long division to 4th graders! I’ve spent a good part of my life designing educational programs that are clinically proven to result in the acquisition of skills. I know that the ability to learn is demonstrated by humans, animals and even some Republicans. So, why don’t I learn? Why, with the shock of the latest regrettable experience bouncing across my nerve endings, do I invariably shout, “I’ll never do this again!” only to rush past the next well-posted off ramp into another dead end?

Why? Because I always think I’m fixed before I am.

No. Or maybe yes? I have always had an unruly mind; I just learned to cover it up really well. Finally, at age 75, I’m back in school— in an MFA program in Creative Writing. Now I just open up a spigot in my mind and let whatever is there today leak out. It’s quite satisfying. Call me a poet.

Linda your brain is like wily coyote always trying to catch the roadrunner. At our advanced age I try to be the milkmaid enjoying the warm day, milk in the 🪣 and thankful that the cow hasn’t kicked me in the head

I will call you a poet, and I’ve always loved and benefited from that spigot in your mind.
