The Only Life Vest

Lately I’ve been asking myself why so few of our leaders speak up in the face of obvious injustice or corruption.

Without the protection of an indivisible majority, an invulnerable minority or an inviolate authority standing by to protect them, too many are reluctant to champion the health and well-being of an organization, a nation or a generation over their own fears and interests. But maybe they’re not alone.

While I have questioned Marjorie Taylor Greene’s moral hygiene on more than one occasion, maybe she’s no more self-interested than I am. Maybe our egos just operate in different realms, with disparate moral and economic exigencies. The truth is, if I were on a sinking ship with Oprah Winfrey and Pope Leo XIV and I had the only life vest, I’m pretty sure the world would lose two treasured icons. I offer no excuse for that, only another question.

Wise Ask: Who can we trust when a pound of self-interest weighs more than a pound of integrity?
