Great Expectations
Re-Recollection
I was disappointed in the Grand Canyon.
I expected something grander. Something larger. Something more
amazing.
“It’s one of the world’s natural wonders!” Daddy announced.
“Is that the same as a miracle?”
“Not quite, but close. It’s over 4,000 feet deep.”
So, not exactly a miracle, but a really, really deep wonder.
“It’s millions of years old,” he continued. “That’s amazing.”
So, not exactly a miracle, but a really, really deep, really, really old, amazing wonder.
Daddy’s description and my expectations were further embellished by the marketing brochure he purchased that boasted, “The Grand Canyon seen from the South Rim is a surreal, unbelievable sight that will leave you changed forever.” Not so much.
Imagine my disappointment as I stood at the south rim looking down, and I could see all the way to the bottom! I could even see across to the other side — a mere 10 miles away.
I always took superlatives, both positive and negative, far too seriously. Every time someone said, “This is going to be fun!” I invariably envisioned something far more amusing and entertaining than the speaker had in mind.
